Catena Zapata, Nicasia Vineyard, Malbec, 2021

An opulent, firm Malbec shaped by high altitude

In the glass, it’s a deep ruby with flashes of purple. The nose is layered and complex, opening with black cherry and ripe plum before moving into savoury notes of fresh herbs, tobacco, and a touch of flinty minerality. On the palate, it’s concentrated and rich, showing plenty of dark fruit supported by a firm, muscular tannin structure. It has a great weight to it - dense but never heavy - and carries through to a long, balanced finish.

  • 100% Malbec
  • Aged for 24 months in French oak and a further 24 months in bottle prior to release
  • pH: 3.65
  • Robert Parker | 96 Pts
Cellaring:  Perfect now
Food Pairing: It pairs beautifully with grilled and roasted red meat, beef tenderloin with vegetables, roast lamb, meat pie and potatoes | 🌡️ Serve at a temperature between 16-18ºC.

STORY BEHIND THE LABEL

Located in the far southern reaches of Altamira in La Consulta, the Nicasia Vineyard holds the exclusive planting of the proprietary Catena Selection Malbec cuttings within this historic district. La Consulta holds special significance as the preferred Malbec terroir of Nicolás Catena’s father, Domingo.

To achieve seamless oak integration, the fruit - composed of 10% whole clusters and 90% whole berries - is hand-loaded into new French oak barrels (225–500 liters) for a 100% barrel fermentation lasting 17 days. By maintaining low fermentation temperatures and utilising wild yeasts, the wine develops intense aromas. Hand-managed cap extraction ensures a profile of soft, gentle flavours and refined tannins. After undergoing both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in-barrel, the wine is aged for 24 months in French oak and a further 24 months in bottle prior to release
